Another trial in Wuhan showed that the drug shortened fever duration from an average of 4.2 days to 2.5 days. Zhang said that Favipiravir has been effective, without any obvious side-effects, in helping coronavirus patients recover.

Fuji Film had no comment on the Chinese government’s announcement. The company produces Avigan only when the Japanese government provides orders and has no sales target, said a Fuji Film spokeswoman. The company’s shares increased by 15% on Wednesday morning after the announcement.
